Why you need an Engagement Session

Every once in a while I’ll get a client who says “do we need engagement photos?” my answer is No, you don’t need to BUT I’d highly recommend doing one. If it’s not included in your photographer’s package, it will be an added expense, I get that but it’s worth it’s weight in gold! Honestly – an engagement session is the single greatest investment you can make prior to your wedding.  A lot of couples have never been professionally photographed – the engagement session is very valuable and every couple should invest into one. Here are many reasons why you should do an engagement session:

Congrats!!! You fell in LOVE and said YES!!! Think about what an engagement really means. It means that you both have decided that this is the person that you want to spend the rest of your life with. An engagement session is more than just pretty pictures. It’s a unique way of showing how in love you are with the other person and announcing it to the world!

This is super important.  Probably the most important reason out there. An engagement photography session is a great way to break the ice with your wedding photographer. I spend at least 2 hours with all my couples, talking, laughing, joking, listening and photographing them all at the same time.  The only way that you will be your natural self around me is if you are comfortable around me.

During your engagement session you get to see my sense of humor, my personality and my quirks and I get to see yours.  I get to build this super important relationship from the ground up – make jokes, have fun, laugh and talk about what’s important to you guys.  Not everyone is great in front of the camera – I get that, and I’ll help you through it.  Every photo we take it will get easier and easier to be yourself.  By the time your wedding comes around, you won’t even remember that you were camera shy, because at that point it’ll be like having a friend photograph your wedding.  (A friend with super awesome photography skills).

I like to make my engagement sessions fun. Even if we’re doing serious poses, I want the atmosphere to feel light and open. I love when couples give me suggestions or let me in on inside jokes and we incorporate them into our shoots! Plus it builds your confidence in your photographer.

Engagement sessions are always a lot of fun. We may go places you’ve never been or may visit places that are very meaningful to you and create some new memories there. I always encourage my couples to come up with ideas that are both creative and fun. The engagement sessions are also a chance for couples to reconnect. During the stress of wedding planning, couples sometimes forget to spend quality time with each other. Use your engagement session to have fun while creating great images. You’ll get a lot out of it.

Lastly, we love engagement sessions for folks who plan to send out Save the Date stationery. We have many of clients that use their engagement pictures as images for their Save the Date magnets, postcards, etc. We LOVE seeing these in the mail. Couples also use these images in their homes, their social media, and at their wedding. Here is a short list of examples of what my clients have used their engagement photos for:

  • Guest signing books
  • Decorations in the entry way at the wedding reception
  • Save the date cards
  • Thank you cards
  • Holiday cards

The list goes on and on and is pretty much only limited by your imagination.

I hope this helps and as always if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to send them my way by using Contact Us option at the top and I will get back to you as soon as I can!
